Review: Mirror Mirror by Dictator

Scottish four-piece Dictator takes a stand against endless comparison and detrimental social media consumption in their new single Mirror Mirror.

If you follow me on Instagram, chances are, you already know this band, but if you don't: allow me to introduce you. Dictator is an electronic indie pop band from Scotland's West Lothian. They launched their first single at the tail end of 2019 and have since then performed sold-out shows across the UK, been awarded 'single of the year' by The Weekender Mag in 2020 and gained a loyal fanbase through authentic banter and atmospheric sound.

This is the band's fourth single of the year, and it's a highly anticipated one. Dictator's no stranger when it comes to dissecting complex issues and exploring big feelings in their music. They've previously tapped into topics ranging from politics and the ever-growing divisions in our society, fearless commentary of the normalisation of drug culture to unconditional, genuine love. No matter what they take on, their ability to make it into absolute bangers stays consistent.

Mirror Mirror challenges the often unhealthy relationship between today's youth and social media. While socials have the incomparable ability to connect us to the world around us, it constantly has us tiptoeing a fine line between belonging and alienation. The growing pressure to always be available, always have the time of your life, and, at the very least, have your shit together is sending more and more people into downward spirals of anxiety, depression and eating disorders, to name a few. Mirror Mirror is a reminder that everything isn't as portrayed. The song itself feels playful. I'm not going to lie; I was ecstatic when I saw that none other than Adam Warrington (YUNGBLUD) produced the track, and I have to say; the song lived up to every expectation I had. It's a fluid dance between light and darkness with deep bass-lines, velvety vocals, catchy drums and funky guitars, beautifully utilising each member's strengths in true Dictator style.

Mirror Mirror is out now via Blackhall Records.
